TRINITY

The word “Trinity” does not appear in the Bible. This word is used to show that there are three persons in one God. They are each described in the Bible while at the same time being revealed as only one God. To the natural mind this is impossible but the Bible is not describing natural persons but “Supernatural”. We are talking about the one and only true and living God. When we look into the Scripture, we see why the word Trinity is being discussed. God is not someone who is limited to our understanding. Let us look at Scripture.

Isa 44:6-8

6 "This is what the LORD says-- Israel's King and Redeemer, the LORD Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God.

7 Who then is like me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and lay out before me what has happened since I established my ancient people, and what is yet to come-- yes, let him foretell what will come.

8 Do not tremble, do not be afraid. Did I not proclaim this and foretell it long ago? You are my witnesses. Is there any God besides me? No, there is no other Rock; I know not one." (NIV)

God Himself tells us He is “One God”. There is no other. He alone is God. This is undisputed and without question.

Isa 43:10-11

10 "You are my witnesses," declares the LORD, "and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me.

11 I, even I, am the LORD, and apart from me there is no savior. (NIV)

Yes God is one and there is no other. However difficult it is for us to understand, within the nature of one God there are three Divine Persons. The reason many people struggle with this is because man attempts to fit God into his own understanding. God, however, being God, is far above and beyond mans'  meager grasp of Divinity. When Moses asked God to tell him his name, God answered:

Exod 3:14-15

14 God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.'"

15 God also said to Moses, "Say to the Israelites, 'The LORD, the God of your fathers-- the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob-- has sent me to you.' This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation. (NIV)

God is Almighty. He is beyond our understanding in all of His elements. In the first book of the Bible God reveals himself in an unusual way.

Gen 1:26

26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." (NIV)

(underline & red for emphasis)

How do we explain God’s plural references when he created man? To whom was he speaking? Surely not to himself, nor to angels.

Gen 1:27

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. (NIV)

In Isaiah, God uses the word “us” again.

Isa 6:8

8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I. Send me!" (NIV)

We believe there are three persons in one God because of many references here and in the New Testament. Remember, we are created beings. All we know is what has been our own experience of nature and life. We cannot judge God by our experience. Nor can we pretend to understand our creator. He is above and beyond our simple human understanding. Look at the first chapter of Luke.

Luke 1:30-32A

30 But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God.

31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus.

32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. (NIV)

Here is the evidence of the second person of the Godhead, Jesus Christ. Jesus was conceived and born of a virgin. He is therefore, the Son of God. If his father is God then the son must have the nature of his father and is therefore God. Since there is only one God, Jesus is truly God as the Father is truly God. Do not try to understand this great and amazing truth. Just as we cannot understand a virgin conceiving and bearing a child, we also cannot understand one God being in three persons. It is best not to try for it is truly beyond our understanding.

Let us look at Jesus as an adult.

Luke 3:21-22

21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened

22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased."

(NIV)

In this moment in Jesus’ life we have a picture of Jesus, the Holy Spirit and God the Father. Each individual person of the Godhead was revealed for us in one glimpse into the three persons in one God.

As Jesus went on with his ministry, he spoke of the Holy Spirit and the Father.

John 14:16-17

16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. (KJV)

Matt 28:18-19

18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: (KJV)

Jesus told us in the great commission, at the end of his earthly ministry, to Baptize in the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. This is great evidence of the Triune God. We are Baptized in the name of our God who is “One God”, Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

In the New Testament Letters there are many references to the three persons of the Godhead. Paul shows this greeting in many places:

2 Cor 13:14

14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. (NIV)

Col 2:9

9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, (NIV)

Paul clearly shows in this scripture that Jesus who was fully human was also fully Divine (God).

In this scripture in the book of Hebrews, God clearly calls Jesus, his Son, “God & Lord“.

Heb 1:8-13

8 But about the Son he says, "Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom.

9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy."

10 He also says, "In the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.

11 They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment.

12 You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end."

13 To which of the angels did God ever say, "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet"? (NIV)

God shows in this scripture that Jesus was in heaven before time began and that creation was through him.

Col 1:16-17

16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.

17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. (NIV)

The creation of the World was also by the Holy Spirit:

Gen 1:2

2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. (KJV)

Gen 1:1

1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. (KJV)

These scriptures clearly show the Father, Son and Holy Spirit created the World.

Yet God states in many places in the scripture that there is One God.

We have a mystery. A mystery is shown in the dictionary to be something beyond human understanding or knowledge.

God is the author of the entire Bible. It is a collection of 66 books written by various authors over many centuries. There are 39 books in the Old Testament and 27 books in the New Testament. Approximately 40 men were inspired by the Holy Spirit at different times and in different places. The Word of God has been challenged by some in every generation but never disproved. Every word in the Bible is inspired by God. Therefore, the Bible is Truth in written form.

Titus 2:11-14

11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men.

12 It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,

13 while we wait for the blessed hope-- the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,

14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good. (NIV)

God is love. He calls us to love one another and receive these truths by faith. Some thinks we will never understand in this life time. As we draw near to the Lord he will reveal all that is necessary for us to know.

All God asks of us is to receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. To accept in faith that Jesus paid for our sins and calls us to a life of obedience to his word. As we walk the walk of faith and obedience, God will guide us and walk with us. He will never leave us nor forsake us. We will never again be at the mercy of chance. Our lives are in the hands of God when we make this simple commitment to Him:

Say this Prayer:

Lord Jesus Christ

I am sorry for my sins.

I believe you died on the Cross for my sins.

I invite you to be Lord of my life.

You are my personal Lord and personal Savior.

Thank you for dying for me.

I ask you to help me to live for you.

Amen
