THE HEART

The world is very concerned with the heart. Everyone knows to be healthy and well we must have a strong and healthy heart. The world is terrified of death. They see that as the end. All hope is lost to them at death. The most miserable people are terminally ill people without hope of eternal life. The natural man may try to make his life count for something while he is on the earth or he may think "eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow you die."  They do not understand the deceptiveness of a hardened heart or the evil of a heart filled with sin and lust. Man is truly blind to his own condition.  The Bible says: "The way a man thinks in his heart, so is he."  We can judge a man's heart by the things he says.  The Bible also says, "Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks."  Yet sometimes we do not even know ourselves, for the Bible also says in 1Kings 8:39, "Only God knows our heart."  God created us for himself.  He wants relationship with us.

When God speaks of the heart in his word, he speaks of it in many different ways.

Evil Heart

Gen 6:5-6

5 The LORD saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.

6 The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain. (NIV)

This is the very first reference to "The Heart" in the Bible. There is a law of "first references". All later references should be weighed against this first reference.

In this Scripture, God is referring to man's focus. At this point in time man was directing all his thoughts toward evil. It was so evil that God Almighty was grieved. God's heart was filled with pain. It is alarming to read that we can cause our Lord pain. We know that physical pain is very difficult to bear but pain of the heart is the most cutting pain of all.

Due to mans' sinfulness coming from his evil heart, God destroyed the earth with a flood. He saved only eight souls, Noah and his family. After this judgment God gave the rainbow as a sign that he would never again destroy the earth with a flood.

Hardened Heart

Man has not learned from the flood. His will is free and he often makes very selfish and wrong choices.

Deut 15:7

7 If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother: (KJV)

It is often easier to turn away from someone's need than to stop and make it your concern. It is difficult to take God's word and make it our duty. Our choices should be in agreement with the word of God.

Hateful & Vengeful Heart

Lev 19:17-18

17 Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him.

18 Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD. (KJV)

Heart towards God

The heart is also described as the place of prayer. Here Abraham's servant tells how he prayed that God would make it clear if this is the maiden God had chosen as a wife for Abraham's son, Isaac. The servant speaks to God in his heart.

Gen 24:42-46

42 And I came this day unto the well, and said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, if now thou do prosper my way which I go:

43 Behold, I stand by the well of water; and it shall come to pass, that when the virgin cometh forth to draw water, and I say to her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water of thy pitcher to drink;

44 And she say to me, Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels: let the same be the woman whom the LORD hath appointed out for my master's son.

45 And before I had done speaking in mine heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down unto the well, and drew water: and I said unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee.

46 And she made haste, and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: so I drank, and she made the camels drink also. (KJV)

God has made us for himself. To speak to him in our heart is prayer, communication with God himself. This is the reason God created man, for fellowship, relationship. Our heart will be whatever we choose.

King David sinned with Bathsheba and the prophet came and accused David.  This opened David's eyes and made him realize the great sin he had committed.  It was not only adultery but he had Bathsheba's husband Uriah sent to the front lines so he was killed in battle.  A sin of adultery escalated to murder.  After Nathan, the prophet accused David he repented deep in his heart and he wrote Psalm 51:10-12& 17 which he said: "Create in me a clean heart oh God and renew a right Spirit within me.  Cast me not away from thy presence and remove not thy Holy Spirit from me.  Restore unto me the joy of my Salvation and uphold me with thy willing spirit.  The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise."

Our hearts are the seat of our emotions & desires according to the Bible.  Recently it has come to the world's attention that some people who have had a heart transplant have taken on the tastes, likes & dislikes of the person who's heart they received.  One woman who hated all things to do with sports, became an avid fan when she received a donor heart from a man who was very sports minded.  We do not understand the mysteries of our makeup.  The Bible was written by God through the hands of men.

There is a place inside us that God has made for himself.  We can attempt to fill that place with riches, success, people, things, all to no avail.  The person who has everything this world can offer will sit in a room alone and feel the emptiness within.  God will only come into your life when you invite Him.  Our lives are our own.  It is free will to choose God or not.  If we do not, the emptiness will never leave.  Our Hearts are the center of our being not just a hard working muscle.  The Heart is the place of decision and pain, love and hate, the place we meet our true selves.  The Heart is the place we meet God or deny Him.  That is why our free will takes us to a place of decision.  The choice is selfishness or repentance.  If we truly stand in the presence of the living God with an open heart, we will bow before Him.  There is no other choice.  God Is.  We are finite beings and if we are honest we will admit that we are not in control.  The Universe is not a chance happening.  Our hearts will tell us the truth if we are open to hear that one and only truth.

God Is!
