ASSURANCE
There is only one way to be certain that you will spend eternity in heaven with God. That one way is to give your life to Jesus Christ. If you do this with a sincere heart and want to follow him and faithfully live a life that is pleasing to him then you can live in peace, knowing that you will spend eternity in heaven. You can have the assurance that you are saved because God says so in his word:
I Jn 5:13
13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God. (NKJ)
John 1:12-13
12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God--
13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. (NIV)
John 5:24
24 "I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.
John 5:28-29
28 "Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice
29 and come out-- those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned. (NIV)
There has been a false teaching in many churches over the years. This error has been that heaven can be earned through our good works. This is not what the Bible teaches. If we could be good enough to earn heaven, Jesus would never have had to come to earth and die for our sins. Jesus death on Calvary was necessary to pay the price for the sin of all mankind.
This false teaching was in the Catholic Church at the time of Martin Luther. He was causing himself pain by crawling up steps to do penance for his sins when this Scripture came to him:
Eph 2:8-9
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,
9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. (NKJ)
When he remembered this Scripture, the truth contained in this passage became real to him, he stood and his life was never the same. This was the beginning of the Reformation. When we have a personal realization that only our faith is necessary to receive this free gift of eternal life, then we are truly free from fear of death.
Jesus work on Calvary is only applied to our lives when we make a personal act of faith and apply his shed blood to our own sins. You can see when Paul spoke to the jailer he made a definite statement regarding the future of this man. There was no work involved, only this man's act of faith.Acts 16:30-32&34
30 He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"
31 They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved-- you and your household."
32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house.
34 The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God-- he and his whole family.
The following Scriptures confirm what is necessary for eternal life.
I Jn 5:12
12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. (NKJ)
I Jn 5:1a
1 Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, (NKJ)
Rom 8:16
16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
(NKJ)
I Jn 5:10-12
10 He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son.
11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.
12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. (NKJ)
We have given many Scriptures that confirm the fact that if you believe in Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord and apply Jesus' work on Calvary to your own life, you are saved. It has been my experience that people who really understand that Jesus died for their personal sins, have changed lives. If your life has not been changed by a relationship with Jesus, perhaps you should re-commit your life to him today and follow these three steps:
1). Pray daily. Set time aside to be alone with the Lord and commune with him.
2). Read the Bible. This is the only book written by God himself. You will find him in these pages. He will reveal himself and his plan for your life as you read his word.
3). Attend a Bible believing church. Have fellowship with other believers. Learn what it means to live the Christian life on a daily basis.
If you really have the Son of God in your life, you will have a changed life.
Rev 22:14
14 Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. (NKJ)
You will keep his commandments as he draws you near to him daily. We will never be perfect but sin will be less and less desirable as you grow in the Lord.
Even though we do not enter heaven because of our works, we work because of our love for the Lord and gratitude for his gift to us of eternal life. Remember, feelings have nothing to do with your salvation. God says in his word:
Matt 24:35
35 "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away. (NKJ)
The way to give your life to Jesus is by believing He is the Son of God and the Bible account of his life and death is true. Say this prayer:
Lord Jesus Christ I am sorry for my sins.
I believe that you gave your life for my sins and
because I receive the forgiveness you earned for me on that cross,
I now have eternal life.
I invite you into my life, to be my personal Lord
and personal Savior.
I thank you for dying for me and I ask
that you help me to live for you.
Amen
